Tips for Combating Stress
It is known that we all have some kind of stress in our lives. Financial stress, relationship stress, work stress, you name it. Many times the cause of the stress has no simple solution but there are steps we can take to reduce the impact it takes on our spirit and body.
Why don't you smile? Do it now. Ok, you're not doing it. Smile. Much better. Studies show that forcing yourself to smile and laugh will actually change your overall mood. Rent a funny movie. Tell a joke. Smile at everyone you see in your office building. Are you getting any exercise? Everyone knows it's good for you but not all of us do it regularly. Exercising does not mean running 5 miles. It can mean taking a walk through the park or walking to the grocery store instead of taking your car. If you have health insurance, you are probably covered to see an Exercise Physiologist. Seeing one can help put you on the right track, especially if you have not kept up with the latest in nutrition and exercise science. You should consider treating yourself to a massage or other type of bodywork.
According to Stephen Sinatra M.D., It's not uncommon for the release of long-held sadness to occur as a result of bodywork. Avoid bad news! Stop reading the newspaper and watching TV news for 1 day, 1 week, or longer. Bad news is not healthy for our bodies according to Andre Weil M.D. Remember the goal is to laugh and smile, not frown and worry. Create a date night. It is easy to forget ourselves with life's responsibilities. The kids need help with homework, the toilet is not flushing properly, and the laundry needs to get done. Treat yourself and your partner to a night out. Leave the kids with a babysitter or have your neighbors watch them for you. Disconnect from your routine and spend time with yourself or your significant other. Try taking your break midweek, Wednesday, for example, to break the routine. Your friends, co-workers, kids, and family will notice a change.
Apply these tips to combat stress and improve your overall quality of life!
