September 2010 - Newsletter

Greetings!

The history of Labor Day in this country is a charged and controversial one, but two key facts are worth remembering - it was made a Federal Holiday in a time of great economic hardship and political divisiveness, and its purpose was to honor the American worker.

These days we are once again experiencing hard times, and it is the American worker who has seemingly taken the worst of them. Over the years Labor Day has drifted from its original cultural role, and now largely serves as a national catch of breath as summer enters its final days. There will be cars on the road and barbecues lighting up all across the country.

Whatever your views on the holiday, and however you choose to celebrate, we at Practical Debt Relief hope it gives you at least one day away from your worries

But remember that credit card companies are in business for one reason: to make money; not to help people. We are in business to settle your debt for less money, so when they learn you have engaged us, many creditors (or the collection agencies working on their behalf) will try as hard as they possibly can to deal directly with you instead of us. Their strategy consists of three simple steps:

1. Intimidate you

2. Instill doubt about the work we do for you

3. Keep you talking with them until you either resume making payments (on your original balance plus all the piled-up interest and fees, of course!) or negotiate a settlement with them yourself at a much higher percentage than our 45%-or-under goal.

If they are successful, they will see a lot more money than if they deal directly with Practical Debt Relief. So you can see that companies and collectors are motivated to tell you just about anything to frighten you and drive a wedge between us, including phrases like "we never deal with debt settlement companies." Statements such as these are misleading at best and flatly untrue at worst.

The best thing for you to do when you answer harassing phone calls from creditors and collectors is to use the call journal and phone script included in the Welcome Package you received when you enrolled. Remember, when they call you, it is always for the same reason - they want money. So why let them cause you stress and lost time?
